Viton™ / FKM rubber parts
FKM is a family of fluorocarbon rubbers. The fluorine in the polymer gives it a strong combination of heat, fuel, oil and chemical resistance. That is why it is used in fuel systems, engines and chemical processing.
Its limits are cost, flexibility in the cold, and a few fluid groups such as ketones, some esters and amines, and strong alkalis. Viton is a brand of FKM. We supply both Viton and generic FKM; if your drawing calls for the brand, say so in your request.
At a glance
| Property | Viton™ / FKM |
|---|---|
| Also called | FKM, Fluoroelastomer, Fluorocarbon rubber |
| Known for | Chemical and high-temperature resistance |
| Typical service temperature | -15 °F to +400 °F (-26 °C to +204 °C) |
| Common ASTM D2000 type and class | HK |
Typical values for general-purpose grades. The compound, the hardness and the service conditions decide what a part can take, so we confirm the compound with your quote. For what the type and class letters mean, see ASTM D2000 callouts.
Resistance profile
Generally good with
- High heat
- Petroleum oils, fuels and lubricants
- Many mineral acids
- Aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons
- Ozone and weathering
Usually a poor choice for
- Ketones such as MEK and acetone
- Low-molecular-weight esters and ethers
- Amines and hot ammonia
- Strong alkalis such as caustic soda
- Low-molecular-weight organic acids such as acetic and formic acid
- Glycol-based brake fluids
- Hot water and steam (standard grades)
- Cold below its rated range
Where FKM is used
- Fuel system and engine seals
- Gaskets and O-rings for chemical processing
- High-temperature seals
- Valve and pump seals
How we make FKM parts
We work in FKM with these processes, all under one roof in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania:
Catalog parts you can request in FKM
Every catalog part is quoted in the material and durometer you name when you add it to your quote.
Quote a part in FKM
Send us a drawing, a sample part or a rough sketch. We will review it, recommend the right material and process, and give you a firm ship date with your quote.
